A heart that still beats for the Heat

Filed under: Sports — lauraldanne at 10:38 am on Wednesday, June 21, 2006

After ranting on my last entry about how the Miami Heat being dreadful, I should of course rave about how they managed to redeem themselves after that horrible 2-0 deficit.

And so they win it all - on the road. They swept the Mavs with four victories straight. And winning their first victory in Dallas all season long. Awesome.

I know a lot of people still have bad things to say about the Heat and the league itself, but you’ve got to admit that the better team did win. They made better plays, everyone contributed, they made baskets, it was great.

So yeah, I can’t wait for next year. This was a great series, in my opinion. Will there be a repeat? I dunno, no one can guarantee that. But with this first victory, it brought us a new breed of champions. And the emergence of a new superstar that is Dwyane Wade.

Too bad that I don’t live in Florida anymore. huhu. They’re having a parade tomorrow in Miami (right, like I can drive all the way to Miami from Tampa to watch it. haha). Nevertheless, I’ve been cheering for Miami for 2 years, it’s about time. Yeah!

Until next year…

In the meantime, today is the first day of summer. And there was a short drizzle outside (syempre, alangan namang inside ang drizzle). And it’s my ultimate crush’s 24th birthday. hehe.

Well, so much for that…later skater.

I have updated my Friendster blog

You have probably arrived here through:

LAZYlalala has updated lauraldanne’s blabbernothings

By a show of hands, who did? Yes, I can almost see those hands shooting up into the air. Ok, seriously, I don’t. I don’t even know if anybody reads this. Haha. Why? Coz nobody leaves any comments. Not that I’m complaining - I may sound like I am, but believe me, I’m not. I used to have a couple of regular commenters before - before I completely deleted my first Friendster blog without warning. I can’t even remember why I did so. Tuloy, no more comments. Blah. And for some reason, I find it difficult to keep track of who leaves comments. I suggest Friendster send out email if someone has left a comment (if they haven’t already).

Even I am guilty of not leaving comments. The thing is, I do read those updated blogs on Friendster. Sometimes I’m just lazy to come up with something equally smart to say, so I just end up nodding my head as if to seem to like I understood and move on to the next blog.

One of my friends blogged a while back about a friend of his who was complaining about that so-called annoying Friendster email alert letting it be known that so-and-so has updated his or her blog. I actually like that feature because it is very convenient. When I go online, the first thing I check is my email. It may be overflowing with Friendster as Sender, but it makes life easier for me coz it serves as an automatic link to newly updated blogs without my having to remember that uber-long URL. There are a couple of URLs that I’ve memorized through time, such as those fellow Blogger/Blogspot friends I have, but some people I know rely on Friendster.

Anyway, what was I getting at? Haha. Oh right, how I like the email update feature. Yeah, I do. End of story.

I really don’t keep my Friendster blog updated regularly. The main reason being that I have a Blogger account. But lately I have had the strangest feeling (kanta yun ah. haha) - seriously, lately Blogger has been giving me a headache. It’s been malfunctioning during the hours that my creative writing juices are overflowing and I am in dire need of an outlet. It just pisses me off. One of my blogfriends and I have even talked about moving to another blog service (boycott!).

I have about a hundred (ok, exag yun) other blogs scattered across cyberspace: blogger, xanga, myspace, livejournal, friendster, multiply, wordpress, tblog, diaryland. It’s insane! I can’t even remember my sn and passwords to some of them anymore. Nevertheless, I never left my first ever blog - which explains why my archive dates way back to 2002. I can’t seem to abandon it for good. AND it’s the only one updated almost everyday. In fairness, it has been completely functional more times than not. It’s only been a couple of weeks that I wanted to kick its system to the curb. So, I dunno what I’m going to do. I don’t wanna leave Blogger, but it’s really starting to annoy the heck out of me. Argh!

While I’m along the lines of ranting, the Miami Heat bored me to tears during Sunday night’s game. They seem to have forgotten that they are playing for the ultimate trophy and some serious bling. They have no play whatsoever and the "supporting cast" has not delivering the shots they need badly. By now, they should be very much aware that Shaq is effective in the paint only when he is UNDER the basket (or a dribble away), and not five dribbles away where he has to fight his way between Mavericks who are double or triple teaming him. Ugh. I actually wanted to retire to bed early because it was a horrible game to watch - the third quarter most especially. But of course, being a true fan that I claim to be (yet not fanatic enough to buy a thousand-plus dollar worth ticket & fly to Miami or Dallas to watch live), I stuck around staying optimistic but being left in vain to witness a 14-point Miami loss. Tonight is Game 3 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Hoy Heat, tama na. Wag nang magpa-talo ha.

So…until my next Friendster blog update. Au revoir.

Only In The Philippines

Obenieta: Chuckle the beloved country
By Myke U. Obenieta
So to speak
www.sunstar.com.ph

While fire is spouted off in the country’s capital, where the voice of reason is hardly heard through the heat of political ferment, the rest of the nation can only spit out a certain dryness in the mouth. How dare Manila speak for the entire Philippine population?

For those in the Visayas baring their fangs against a long-perceived imperial hauteur, there’s a tickle in the tongue over a recent hue and cry: the birth of a Bisdak Republic.

Never mind all our heroes who died for an unchained but united archipelago.

But considering how observers of this so-called "Pearl of the Orient Seas" can only roll cynical eyeballs against the swell of a sinking feeling, there’s no putdown epithet more apt than the offhand ode to our uniqueness as a race: "Only in the Philippines."

Hereunder is a catalogue of catty observation from someone in my e-group. Bring it on, or so Bisdaks may wink and wince at this bittersweet view of the Philippines:

"Where people speak all kinds of languages, and still call it Tagalog.

Where call center employees earn more money than teachers and nurses. Where even doctors, lawyers and engineers are unemployed.

Where the school is considered the second home and the mall considered as third.

Where students pay more money than they will earn afterwards. Where every street has a basketball court, and every town only has one public school.

Where kids dream of becoming pilots, doctors, actors and basketball players.

Where crossing the street involves running for your dear life. Where flyovers bring you from the freeway to the side streets. Where honking of car horns is a way of life. Where flood waters take up more than 90 percent of the streets during the rainy season. Where traffic signs are merely suggestions, not regulations. Where the definition of traffic is the "non-movement" of vehicles.

Where everyone has his personal ghost story. Where everything can be forged. Where people can pay to defy the law. Where being held up is normal because it happens to everyone.

Where even the poor get to wear Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger and the latest cell phones (GSM - galing sa magnanakaw). Where Starbucks coffee is more expensive than gas. Where all kinds of animals are edible. Where fastfood is a diet meal. Where water can only be classified as tap and dirty, and clean water is for sale (P35 per gallon).

Where tourist spots is where Filipinos do not (or cannot) go.

Where a personal computer is mainly used for games and Friendster. Where billiards is a sport, and playing darts is a bar game.

Where colonial mentality is denied. Where wearing national colors make you "baduy." Where everything is spoofed.

Where being called a bum is never offensive. Where everyone has a relative abroad who keeps them alive.

Where the church governs the people. Where the government makes the people pray for miracles.

Where rodents are normal house pets. Where soap operas tell the realities of life and where the news provides the drama.

Where actors make the rules. Where politicians provide the entertainment.

Where cigarettes and alcohol are a necessity. Where lottery is a commodity.

Where everyone wants to leave the country."

I miss you, Pilipinas! =)
